Berlin - A Different Perspective

Overall Description

Experience with us the regenerating capital of Germany, Berlin. A city that faces its tragic and dark past with respect and awe, a city where one of the most important Jewish communities in Europe flourished, and brought forth such prominent figures as Moshe Mendelssohn, Albert Einstein, Heinrich Heine, Hartwig Wessely and many others. Berlin offers its residents and visitors a host of opportunities to experience high quality culture, art, music, architecture and more, while promoting liberalism and respecting others within its urban space.

Day 3: The story of Jewish Berlin

The Jewish community in Berlin was one of the most important Jewish communities in Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. Prominent figures such as Moshe Mendelssohn (father of the Enlightenment movement), Azriel Hildesheimer (founder of modern Orthodoxy), Albert Einstein and many others were part of that community. This is where the greatest changes in Judaism in modern times began and a thriving community developed, reaching its peak on the eve of the Nazi rise to power. The destruction of this impressive community and the way in which it has dealt with its past over the years will also be addressed. How did people in the east and in the west regard the horrors that occurred here in the years following WWII? How did the atmosphere change in the 1970s, the time of the second generation, and what led to the changes that took place in the late 1980s? The story of the Jewish community of Berlin - one of the most glorious communities in Europe - is story moving like no other.

The sites we’ll see include:

Hackescher Markt

The Women's Block Monument ("Women's Protest") and the old synagogue

The old cemetery - the burial place of Moshe Mendelssohn

The Jewish school

"The Missing House"

"Pier 17" monument in Grunwald

The Kindertransport Monument - a rescue project of Jewish children sent to England.

Other classic sites related to the history of the Jewish community.

Day 4: Potsdam, Sanssouci Gardens and Villa Wansee

A trip to Berlin is not complete without a visit to the city of gardens and palaces - Potsdam. Less than19 miles from the center of Berlin lies one of the most beautiful pearls of Europe, which for many years was the main base of the Prussian army and played an important role in the history of the region.

The heart of the trip to Potsdam is a visit to the Sanssouci Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sometimes referred to as the "Versailles of Berlin". During the day we will walk in the spectacular green gardens and hear the fascinating story of Frederick the Great, the legendary King of Prussia. During the break, we will spend time in the classic and lively pedestrian zone in the heart of the old and picturesque district of Potsdam.

Prior to returning to Berlin, we will stop to visit the museum in Villa Wannsee, where the discussion about the final solution to the "Jewish problem" took place. Although the decision on the final solution was not made at this conference - which will be discussed in more detail in the course of the tour itself – it is vital to our understanding of the chain of events that led to the Holocaust of the Jews of Europe. During the visit, a historical explanation of the conference and its importance will be given; time will be allotted to visit the on-site exhibition.

The sites we will see include:

Sanssouci Gardens

The old town of Potsdam

The Dutch Quarter

Villa Wannsee

Day 5: Alternative Berlin

Berlin has become famous as a center of alternative lifestyle, subversive art and bold ideas.

Back in the days of the Weimar Republic, Berlin positioned itself as a postmodern city where nothing is too strange and any fantasy can come true. Following the fall of the Berlin wall, the city was transformed from the capital of militarism to a center of freedom and art, where anything is possible. It became a 'playground' for modern architects and at the same time a bustling center of underground art and new creation. Naturally, the city develops and changes frequently, so there are constant political conflicts between companies and corporations, and the locals and subversive forces, which we will discuss during the day.

During the tour we’ll see some of the centers of alternative culture in Berlin alongside controversial projects of contemporary architecture and their impact on the development of the city. We will visit abandoned industrial complexes taken over by social activists and artists, and areas where 'different' is the norm and human sexuality is expressed in unconventional ways. On our way we will see a variety of examples of street art and get to know the different techniques of graffiti artists and the ideology behind them.

The sites we’ll see include:

Spectacular examples of contemporary architecture

East Side Gallery - "The Wall Gallery"

Alternative cultural complexes

The 'Pink Patch' monument to homosexuals murdered by the Nazis

Street art and graffiti

Neighborhoods where artists, anarchists and immigrants have been integrated into a fascinating human mosaic

Oberbaum Bridge

Hidden corners and other sites in the Schoenberg, Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain neighborhoods.

The Culinary Tour

The culinary tour invites you to discover the city through its farmers' markets, typical food and flavors, and takes you through the less touristy areas so you can experience Berlin like a local!

The city of Berlin today is a city of immigrants, to which people from all over the world have come over the years. Those same immigrants brought to the city many flavors, foods and culinary changes.

Berlin is home to over 7000 restaurants, which in total have about 30 Michelin stars, many markets and countless food events.

The price includes sample tastings of typical foods (which we will tell you about in detail during the tour), a visit to several markets and selected delicatessen where you can also purchase products to your liking.

The culinary tour route varies according to the day of the week and the interesting markets that take place on that day - we occasionally change the markets we visit and update the tour regularly.
